Chocolate Slavery

Around the world millions of people enjoy delicious chocolate bars. But have you ever stopped to think of the people who work to make it?

By Anja
Its horrifying to think that in this day and age, where we proudly pronounce ourselves above the terrible things that happened in our past, we are ignorant to the fact that slavery still lurks out of sight and mind. In West Africa on the cocoa farms supplying cocoa to chocolate giants such as Nestle and Cadbury, children and adults are being  forced to work as slaves. It makes me sick.
I don’t think I will ever be able to eat another chocolate bar or egg without thinking about those poor children, some who don’t even know what chocolate is. Thank goodness companies such as Ferrero are fighting against this ‘chocolate slavery’. In fact Ferrero has pledged that by 2020 none of the cocoa in their chocolates will have been picked by child slaves.
But slavery is a big of a threat as ever and us as consumers must make a stand too. Personally I will find out about which companies are fighting against using children on the cocoa farms and support them.
Together we can wipe out slavery, completely this time.
